- There was also the concern that the field workers might not have accurately transcribed the dialects.
Olai Skulerud's Innovative Approach
- Olai Skulerud, director of the Målføresamlinga, had a groundbreaking idea in 1948. He aimed to make sound recordings of dialects using a simple technique that involved recording on lacquer plates.
- Skulerud collaborated with Albert Eide Gloppen, who had experience in making recordings of people sending personal greetings to relatives in America before the war.
- The first recording featured Ola Midtbø from Masfjorden, providing insight into the Masfjord dialect from 1948, spoken by a man born in 1877.
Challenges in Dialect Preservation
- Despite the breakthrough in recording techniques, there were challenges. The records couldn't be played on regular gramophones, and their playback required special equipment.
- In 1980, Gloppen's equipment was connected to a tape recorder, representing the best sound storage technology at the time. However, the use of gramophone records for dialect preservation ceased.
Introduction of the Magnetophone
- In 1951, Skulerud introduced the magnetophone, a type of tape recorder, into the dialect collection process. He recorded a speaker from Fana, south of Bergen.
- Surprisingly, Skulerud later transferred these recordings back to lacquer plates. He had reservations about the tape recorder, and this decision ultimately preserved the recordings for posterity.
